Aimee Song’s Capture Your Style

I was gifted Aimee Song‘s Capture Your Style for Christmas (not a surprise, I put it on my list). The aesthetic of the book is beautiful. It’s feminine in its blush tones yet strong with it’s black text.

The book is a mix of Aimee’s photography and her tips on how her followers can recreate their version of her photography. It’s part photobook, part guidebook. Equal parts, beautiful.

Some of my major changes after reading Capture Your Style are:

  • Thinking in twelves – I now give more thought to how my posts compliment each other

  • Have a mission statement – This reminds me to stay true to posting images of experiences that fit with the brand theme

  • Storytelling: Tell a story with every post – This is a point I try to implement in every aspect of life: daily conversations, media pitches, social media posts, etc.

  • Hashtag, caption and timing etiquette – No more than five hashtags. Tag more for cleaner hashtags. Posts must be at least an hour apart

Once you’ve reached the end of the book, you’ll probably still refer to it for certain tips as your Instagram account progresses (i.e. as your content improves, as your followers increase, as branded opportunities arise). Casually browsing through Capture Your Style reminds me of tips I should be implementing in my photography and Instagram posts. I plan to let it join the ranks of my favourites for frequent reference and then will make it a coffee table book due its numerous pages of simply beautiful photography. (Note from the future: while this is still a beautiful book, I haven’t referred to it since 2017. Also, consider reading Estee Lalonde’s Bloom - another aesthetically pleasing book, but also an inspirational story to read.)
