Short Hair, Don’t Care
I get my hair cut every two years. I either grow it out so it’s long or I chop off 12 or more inches. Every time I have long hair, I miss the ease of short hair that feels free and light. And every time I have short hair, I miss the length of long hair and the ability to curl it and really glam it up.
In January, I started feeling the itch to chop off my hair since the length had resulted in a few split ends and a limp-looking pony tail with dead ends. My hair started to make me feel pretty blah and unless I curled it, no matter how fashionable my outfit or glammed up my make up looked, my hair just didn’t carry that upbeat feeling. It was starting to wear me down.
I also don’t spend too much time on hair maintenance on a day-to-day basis. I either throw it up into a bun or ponytail and on rare occasion will straighten or curl it. Therefore my hair was giving me a strong case of the blahs on the regular. I tried to hold out until November to cut it, but just couldn’t wait any longer so I walked into Donato Salon + Spa and had 12 inches chopped off so my hair is now just about an inch above my shoulders.
I love these drastic cuts because you never know exactly what it’s going to look like and it’s such a change from the previous look; it feels like a new leaf turned over, a chance (or a reminder, maybe?) to be an exciting version of yourself. Also, I’m of the opinion that it’s just hair, it’ll grow back. I understand this is quite a nonchalant approach to haircuts and might sound scary or crazy to most people, but I’ve also never had an “unfixable” bad cut at Donato.
It’s awesome how a change in hair – cut or style or colour – can impact our mood and look. I was quite nervous to chop it off since every time I’ve previously cut my hair, I’ve missed being able to curl my length. But this time was different. I’ve been reading Bloom by Estée Lalonde and after seeing about 100 pictures of her in just-above-the-shoulder length hair dispersed throughout her book made the short hair itch impossible to not scratch. Just to make sure it was for me, I looked up some styling tips for short hair to ensure I wouldn’t get bored and came across a useful article recently published by Marie Claire, The 45 Best Short Hairstyles and Haircuts to Try. The diversity of face shapes and hairstyles was so exciting to peruse, it was the cherry on top of my decision to snip, snip, snip and keep snipping. Major #hairinspo.
Personal favourites – and definitely examples of what styles I’ll try to emulate from the Marie Claire piece:
#11 Rose Byrne (favourite!)
#14 Kristen Stewart (I’ll have to rekindle my friendship with mousse)
#17 Taylor Schilling
#19 Sarah Paulson (Damn she rocks a short-do well – mentioned twice in this list!)
#31 Beyoncé (Loving the thickness at the bottom of this doo and the casual non-slicked, non-try-hard look – is anything Bey does try-hard?)
#42 Sienna Miller (Somehow must master this side tuck)
#44 Miranda Kerr (That deep curvy part though)
