2018 Gives Me the Feels

2018 seems to be the year we all get right. I feel everyone finally understood what next steps we needed to take towards the end of 2017 and we’re all ready for what we need to keep doing to make things happen in 2018.

2018 has high hopes. Everyone seemed to be ready to get over 2017, while still appreciating the lessons it taught us. Lessons tend to derail us for a minute (see: months) and cause us to learn but also to hurt. So we pick ourselves up and wipe off our tears and then develop a plan, do the preliminary work and then set sail towards our goals.

2017 started with pain.

2018 will be strong. Every new year starts with an overflow of motivational quotes and resolutions and promises and hopes. That was 2017 and the years before it. The start to 2018 seems different because we seem grown – passed the making of resolutions and have graduated to making goals. Goals require weekly check-ins but more importantly they require monthly progress points and growth. This is opposite to a resolution where we’re likely to promise to do something everyday and then when we miss a day, we scrap the resolution. Goals require progress over a longer period of time, and while they are more forgiving when you miss a day, they force you to work harder to make up for that missed day rather than give up. For example: resolution – I promise to go to the gym everyday. You miss one day, your resolution is toast for the month. Goal – I promise to focus on my health and better self-care, part of which is going to the gym or working out or doing physical activity three times a week. The latter is more likely to get me to go to the gym three days in a row to hit that goal or even to turn it into three spaced out workout days or even double the effort and time on one of those days to make it feel like it was three days of working out.

Anyways, I’m excited to see myself progress and achieve what I’m setting out to do in 2018. It’s our year to make things happen, where dreaming turn to doing. I am glad we got things together at the tail end of 2017 so that our work is cut out for us in 2018. It’s no longer about hope, it’s about writing down a goal and making it happen.

Get to writing and get to making it happen.
